Sir,
In the absence of Mr. Schoolcraft at New York, I beg leave to inform the department that application has been made, at this office, by Mah-in-gun and Pee-pe-qu-aince, the former for the payment of 800.00 and the latter for 200 dollars, allowed to them agreeably to Schedule “B” under the 4th Article of the Treaty of January 14th 1837, with the Chippewa of Saganaw (sic). As there is no funds on hand to meet claims of this character, the department will oblige these individuals by remitting funds to the proper disbursing officer at this place to meet their claims.
I am Sir
